As with any skill or sport, the minor adjustments and attention to details help make all the difference. I look to address a few of those details here in this post.<br /><br />Like many bowlers across the nation, you are probably in week 6 of your bowling season and starting to get back into the groove and routine of league night. For many, the biggest adjustment is getting to the bowling center on time and then up for work the following morning. There were a number of things I was able to "notice" the past 2 weeks and are certainly worth sharing. As a coach in multiple sports and a consultant analysis in a number of business fields, I tend to be quite observant even when trying not to be.<br /> The first thing that was obvious was the mental preparedness of the bowlers coming in to begin their night of bowling. Many folks are coming in late and in a rush and not going through any sort of routine to get ready to bowl. Hence the first game is a slow start, no rhythm and the lack of focus leaves quite a number of bowlers struggling through the first 5 frames until they get comfortable. If this sounds like you, start to develop a routine each week and try to arrive early enough to get through that routine comfortably and without feeling rushed.<br /> Another area of concern which I sometimes fall victim to is the lack of proper nutrition on bowling night. With many leagues starting around 6pm, there are quite a few bowlers who don't get a chance to grab dinner before hitting the lanes and are either forced to eat on the way via a drive-thru or they eat something quick at the bowling center. Some however, as I have overheard and noticed don't eat anything at all! By the time 830 comes around and the final game is underway, they are lethargic and tired and the ball just does not have the same drive or speed. Pack a lunch, a powerbar or something of that nature to get you through those nights so you don't let a good series get away because you are running low on fuel.<br /> This final observation is always a difficult one because many bowlers are just stubborn in their methodology and some struggle to change. When something is not working, make minor adjustments instead of huge changes which include a 5 board move, or a complete ball and alignment change. It just boggles the mind that when the ball is not reacting in a manner that the bowler expects, they make dramatic changes and go searching in the middle of a game. For instance, the oil is a bit heavier than usual for whatever reason and the ball just is not getting all the way back to the pocket with any real drive. Instead of the ball change or the extreme move left with ridiculous hand, how about start moving half a board inside until the ball checks up the way you want it to? I have the question why someone would want to change the angle and the breakpoint in such a radical way when minor adjustments will not only allow you to zero in on the pocket but allow you to "burn" in your own breakpoint.<br /><br /> One final topic I wanted to cover. With the season just starting, you certainly want to bowl the best you can to help your team each week. A fellow bowling colleague of mine has put together a terrific book to help everyone get more out of bowling and to maximize their potential. This book simply works on the key areas of your game both mental and physical. There is so much data in this book that I would need to write for another 2 hours just to be able to highlight it all!<br /><br />Bottom line is that I grabbed this book and shared it with 3 bowlers locally and over the last 2 months every single one of their averages have increased by and average of 14.7 pins!!! Each week they seem to be improving and I think it really speaks to the way that Eric Miller has written this book and the bonus reports. It's easy to understand, visualize and apply to your bowling game. The book does not go and change all of your mechanics like some other books do, it adjusts and modifies and reduces your opportunity for mistakes and errors both mentally and physically which I believe is huge.
